Today we celebrate one of the oldest dogs in the world, Dino the Dinosaur. Most of you will recognize Dino as the faithful dog in the animated TV series The Flintstones, that ran in prime time from 1960 to 1966. The Flintstones were described as the modern stone age family in the opening theme.
Dino is technically a sauropod dinosaur or Snorkasaurus, but he had all the characteristics of a typical family dog. Dino was faithful to a fault. When Fred would come home after a hard day working for Mr. Slate at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company, Dino would come charging to greet him.
Unfortunately, what followed was Fred getting knocked down and smothered with sloppy kisses. Dino apparently didn’t realize he was a 7 foot tall, 300 lb. dog! But Fred was a good sport and would end up laughing.
I love to hear Dino’s bark. The voice actor who did it was the great Mel Blanc, who also did the voice of Barney Rubble.
Dino loved to eat and he liked great, big steaks. He was usually the one who stole Fred’s steak and would eat it before getting caught.
I feel sorry for Fred Flintstone because at the end of every show, they would show him trying to put the family cat outside and he would get locked out of the house by the cat. Typical cat. Notice that it was not Dino’s fault!
